Dirty Monkey Cocktail
A Dirty Monkey Drink is a creamy, tropical beverage with key flavors like banana and chocolate. While there are many variations of this dessert-like cocktail, the banana flavor is always present. (Because monkeys love bananas, of course!)
This alcoholic beverage can also be called a dirty banana drink. You can make this drink with many different ingredients and types of alcohol as well, so there are no clear differences between the two.
If you’re anything like us, you probably first tried a Dirty Monkey Cocktail at a resort while on vacation, as the drink is popular at resorts in Playa del Carmen, Punta Cana, Jamaica, and Costa Rica.

How to Make a Dirty Monkey
Making a Dirty Monkey is simple, even though the ingredients list seems long. For this recipe, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- pineapple juice
- cream of coconut
- banana liqueur
- aged rum
- chocolate syrup (for garnish)
- maraschino cherry (for garnish)
- whipped cream (for garnish)
If you don’t have all of the ingredients, that’s okay! You can substitute with something close or skip the ingredient altogether. But remember, the key ingredient is banana, so you don’t want to leave that out.
For this recipe, you’ll need a blender to combine all of the ingredients. Because many ingredients are not frozen, you won’t need an expensive, high-quality blender. But you’ll need one that will be able to completely pulverize all the ice.
We recommend serving this cocktail in a hurricane glass (the glass that is pictured). If the presentation doesn’t matter to you, and you’re more concerned with keeping your drink cold, you can also use any large, insulated glass.
To make a dirty monkey, put all of the ingredients that aren’t used for garnish in a blender, and blend everything together until there are no ice chunks left and the drink is creamy.
Drizzle chocolate syrup into a hurricane glass, pour the blended drink into the glass, and garnish with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and a maraschino cherry!
- 1 banana
- 2 oz pineapple juice
- 1/2 oz cream of coconut
- 2 oz aged rum
- 1/2 of banana liqueur
- 1/2 oz Kahlua
- 1 cup ice
- chocolate syrup garnish
- whipped cream garnish
- maraschino cherry garnish
- Place all ingredients in a blender (except the ingredients for garnish)
- Blend until smooth and creamy
- Drizzle chocolate syrup inside a hurricane glass
- Pour mixture into the hurricane glass
- Optional: garnish with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and a maraschino cherry
